Aspiration {Inspiration} :: Worth It?

Yesterday I attempted to make quinoa flour.

Score on finding this huge bag at Costco – Quinoa for everyone!

The directions I found online were simple enough.

Take 2 C quinoa…

Toast it for 5 minutes on medium heat…

Stop after you hear popping for about 2 minutes.  Remove and process until flour consistency.

This looks pretty flour-y, wouldn’t you say?


Gossip Girl reference, anyone?

First of all, my quinoa never really made a popping sound, and I had the damn thing cooking for over 15 minutes!

Second, my baby food processor, could not get the quinoa chopped small enough.   I read later if you sift the flour, while processing you can get the good stuff out, and focus on the stubborn pieces.

Worth it?

Next time I want to make pizza, I will spend the absolutely ridiculous price for pre-made quinoa flour, because now I see it’s totally worth it.

So where am I going with all of this?

With my recent realization that I can actually make {and not ruin} my own homemade oat flour and cashew butter, I’ve also discovered, how easy and quick they are create. Plus, I feel better about eating them.  SO, I think I’m going to give the whole DIY thing a bit of a go this summer.

I eat a ton of whole foods, but I’d like to try my hand at making homemade versions of the processed foods I frequently consume:

  • Yogurt
  • Bread
  • Jam
  • Cream cheese
  • Hummus
  • Salsa
  • Pasta
  • Dried Fruit
  • Salad dressings

  • Hummus: homemade (1 C), $0.85 // store-bought, $3.10
  • Guacamole: homemade (1 C), $1.50 // store-bought, $4.50
  • Potato chips: homemade, $0.80 // store-bought, $1.30
  • Loaf of bread: homemade, $1.00 // store-bought, $4.39

I’m curious to see ‘is it worth it?’  based on ease of preparation and the cost to do so.

Obviously, quinoa flour did not make the worth it list.

So keep an eye out.

Pretty Produce Public market Pictures

I made it safely back to Rochester on Friday night.

It’s always hard to leave the comfort of home.

And adjusting your schedule.

Remember, I thrive on routine.

But! Tomorrow is back to school.

Yeah, pretty sure it should be the other way around on account of all the work they assigned over break… ;)

Between Friday and now, I have done a lot of reading research articles for Senior Project…

And eating…

Yesterday was a trip to the public market.

It was an absolutely beautiful day and we rode our bikes there.

A lap around the market is always a must.  Checkin’ out the wares.  Lookin’ for the best deal.

Taking pictures of the beautiful produce is almost as fun as eating it later.

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage
  • Sweet peas
  • Yogurt
  • Whole wheat pizza crusts
  • Full Sour Pickles
  • Cherries (yes, quite strange for January, but surprisingly delicious!)
  • Perogies
  • Potatoes
  • Cinnamon Sugar Chips
  • Real Maple Syrup
  • A Humongous Green Bell Pepper (seriously, it’s huge)
  • Pasta

Somebody’s gonna be doin’ some good eatin’ this week!

Wegmans is the Best

YAY! My Menu Magazine arrived in the mail!

I have never subscribed or requested to be on their mailing list.  It just shows up at my door.  I have a feeling it’s there way of saying, “Thank you for the obscene amount of money you spend at our store each week.”  No, Wegmans.  Thank you.

As pretty much everyone knows, Wegmans is the best grocery store in the land.  Wegmans is king. Wegmans is the rock star of grocery stores.  Wegmans is to us grocery shopping folk what Justin Beiber is to teeny boppers.

See what I mean?

I might very well squeal, “I love you Wegmans” in a moment of insanity!

And now I love them even more.

As I flipped open my mag, right on the first page…

It’s the new Choose MyPlate!

Oh, Danny Wegman, how I love you!  Way to spread the word AND encourage the good shoppers of Wegmans to eat more veggies!

And on that note, I promptly got my self down to the store and bought lots and lots of goodies.

I hear that once you go to the real stuff, you never go back.

I’ve always wanted to try this stuff. All-natural and no high fructose corn syrup!

Raw Honey is also something I have always wanted to give a shot.

This has the possibility of being very frustrating. Patience is not always my strongest virtue.

So I can bring salads to school and keep them nice and cold. And the dressing separate. No wilty greens for me, thank you!

Another new thing. I am still on the fence on how I feel about stevia, but I found a delicious recipe for Pumpkin Protein Muffins and thought I’d try it out.

    • Honey
    • Muffin making ingredients
    • Easy-to-pack lunch foods
    • Lunch tupperware (My supplies have significantly decreased…Where they’ve gone, no one knows.  Does this happen to anyone else?)
    • Fruit to freeze
  • Get quarters (10 minutes)
  • Do laundry (3 hours)
  • Make another freaking appointment to get my oil changed (I made an online appointment last week that apparently never got sent and when I called to confirm, they said they never received it! Grrrr…) (10 minutes)
  • Write bio for my nutrition counseling job (30 minutes)

I forgot to call to make an appointment.  Eh, not that big of a deal.

I also accomplished a few other things too! I picked up Krause which arrived in the bookstore today, and made muffins (I wasn’t planning on doing any baking today- just shopping for ingredients)!

Whew.  What a whirlwind day.  I’m exhausted.

I <3 Oats

I went to grocery store and lookie what I found…


Pardon the double chin. I really need to practice working my angles. You know, for my budding modeling career and all. ;)

And also, don’t be offended. I am not sticking my tongue out at you. I am just really excited, possibly even drooling. THAT’s how much I <3 oats.

I was forced by the oats gods to purchase all three of these boxes, but have yet to try them.  Mainly because, a) I’m not wild about instant oats; b) My microwave kicked the bucket a week ago; and c) I kind of like opening up my cabinets and seeing these boxes with their big ol’ hearts sending me the oats love.

Once my oats muse speaks to me, I’ll break into them.

Do you have any suggestions to put my 18 packets of instant oatmeal to use?

Do you ever impulse buy  simply because of packaging?

Look at what I got!!

I have never done anything with polenta before, but it keeps popping up on other people’s blogs.  Makes me curious…

When I worked at Cafe Fiorello in NYC, they made the BEST polenta fries. Oh lawdy.

I so wish to find a delicious recipe for polenta french fries.

Or any other delectable polenta recipe. :)
