I Have Arrived.

by Stephanie

Today marks the beginning of my first full month of California dreaming living.

I arrived in to town a week ago yesterday.  I don’t even have the words to describe how beautiful, incredible, amazing this place is.

Let’s start with the drive down from Washington, shall we?

Our start was a bit of whirlwind.  So we found out that we got the apartment on a Tuesday (the 21st of August) evening.  The next day I called to see what steps we need to take to so we can get moved in on either Saturday of Sunday, as my family and I planned to leave early Friday morning.

Welp, the realty office was not able to assign keys, go through paperwork, and do their formal walk-through of the apartment on the weekends, so that left us with two choices – a Friday afternoon appointment OR a Monday afternoon date.  Seeing that my family had to leave town early Tuesday, Monday was out of the question; there would just be no time to get unloaded, set up, or more importantly, explore the town!  So Friday afternoon it was!

Thankfully, during my conversation with the realtor, my father was out picking up the U-Haul trailer, so at least we had something to pack all my belongings in to, and that’s exactly what we did.  He got home, and we began loading up.  Three hours later my Dad and I hit the road in his truck.  My mom planned to bring up the rear in my Subaru the next day after she got off work.

Whirlwind, no?  Instead of leaving Friday, we left Wednesday afternoon – a day and a half ahead of schedule.  I am usually a planner/scheduler that likes things to run  according to plan, so I really must pat myself on the back for my flexibility during that time – no freak outs, just a get.it.done attitude.

SO, after that whole fiasco, we hit the peaceful road.  I won’t bombard you with photos of the drive down (I took over 300), but here are a few of my favorites.  If you want to see more, check out my facebook albums.

Saying goodbye to the beautiful Columbia River.

Heading in to Oregon.

Gorgeous sunset over the farmlands.

Mt. Hood.

And that was a wrap for Day 1.

Moving on to Day 2…

Beautiful view of the Three Sisters.

And the breathtaking Mt. Shasta.

I mean, seriously, it’s huge!

BTW, Welcome to California! There was no big California sign when we entered, just an agriculture check to make sure we weren’t smuggling any produce into the state. {They allowed our big bag of Costco carrots, thankfully.} You can see why they have this border check, as the rest of road down to SLO [San Luis Obispo] was lined with farmlands, orchards, and vineyards.

The California Aqueduct.

About half hour away from SLO is WINE COUNTRY! I think Paso Robles and I are going to become good friends.

We made it!

That big M stands for Mustangs, the Cal Poly mascot Madonna. {Yeah, was totally wrong on that.}

Dad and I checked out the campus, Friday morning before hitting up the real estate office to pick up keys.

Yay! Found the Nutrition building!

After our quick tour of campus, we picked up our keys and the rest is history!

Welcome Home!

{Pictures from my lovely roomate, Dana!}

I think I’m going to like it here!

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!

Collin Comes to Town :: Part 4 – Eastern Washington

by Stephanie

Top of the morning!

Today we finish off the mini-series, “Collin Comes to Town.”

{Part 1 // Part 2 // Part 3}

We last left off as Collin and I took the pass over the Cascade Mountains into Central Washington.

After our whirlwind-jam-packed tour of Seattle, we needed a little R&R and a slower pace.

Our days kind of went like this…

Laying down by the river, visiting a local brewery, then taking pictures of me playing with the weeds…

Visiting the cute, Bavarian town of Leavenworth…

…which included a trip to the hat shop.

…and my first taste of gelato…

Mikey likes it! {This was right after I scorched my mouth on “The World’s Hottest Salsa.” Yeah, I was trying to be tough stuff, but instead left the shop crying.}

We stopped at local fruit stands…

…and tried out some honey.

…and ate a ton of cherries!

So good.  I didn’t allow Collin to buy any fruit on the Seattle side [much to his chagrin], simply because I knew we could get a better deal on this side of the mountain and that they would taste soooo much better.  {Speaking of a good deal – yesterday my dad and I got cherries for $1 a pound! And they are GOOD!}

We hiked up Saddlerock…

Taking pictures a long the way, of course.

Back side of the rock…

On top!

It’s a pretty little town, no?

We also spent a couple of days in Chelan. One day at the waterslides, which was a blast, and the other wine tasting.

Romping through the vineyards…

And taking cute #selfies…

All in all a perfect 12 days! [Which could have been extended for a whole month - there are so many things to do here!]

Maybe next summer, but until then…

Back to your regular programing.

Laters, baby.

Collin Comes to Town :: Part 3 – Final Days in Seattle

by Stephanie

Hello and welcome back to another addition of  Collin Comes to Town!

If you are just tuning in, check out…

_____

When we last left off, Collin and I had visited Seattle’s gorgeous Waterfront, and we decided to head back to the Pike Place district to find him a pair of Adidas Busenitz.  Have you heard of these shoes?

Source

Apparently, Rochester, NY is crazy over them and can’t keep them on the shelves.  Of course, they are C-Dawg’s favorite sneakers, so when we planned our itinerary we included a skate shop to see if we could snag a pair.  Well, here’s the funny part – the skate shop which I thought was on Pike St. (near Pike Place Market), was actually E. Pike St.  For those unfamiliar with Seattle, E. Pike St. is in Capitol Hill, which is quite a steep hike and a good distance away.  So we hiked & got a good tour of Downtown Seattle.

  1. Collins’ Building
  2. Smith Tower – Tallest building on the West Coast until 1962 when the Space Needle was built.
  3. Columbia Tower – Tallest skyscraper in Seattle
  4. Daniel’s Recital Hall
  5. Seattle Public Library

Cool coffee shop in Capital Hill that served Genny Beer all the way from Rochester, NY.

We made it!

And Collin got his shoes. Thank gawd.

The next day, we had a leisurely breakfast, and headed to Pioneer Square to catch the Underground Tour.

This was actually really cool!  Our tour guide had a great, {dry}, sense of humor + we learned a lot about the history of Seattle.

After the tour, we hit up the U-district, which both Collin and I weren’t that fond of – too dirty and run down for my taste.

On our final day, we began the day with a trip to Gas Works Park.

There is an awesome sundial up at the top of Gas Works Park hill.

The battle of Nikon vs. Canon.

Sea planes were zooming overhead.

Could the Seattle skyline get any more beautiful?

We then hit up the Fremont Troll.

I don’t think you can see very well, but there were about 7 bums sleeping behind him. I can’t imagine that being very restful with all the tourists snapping pictures and kids climbing all over the troll… but to each there own. ;)

We polished off the day with a trip to Redhook Brewery and Chateau St. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, wherein which {for the life of me can’t believe happened} we did not take any pictures. It was probably one of my favorite parts of our Seattle visit, too!

Then it was over the hill and through the woods to Eastern Washington – my home!

A very concentrated driver.

Which is where I will leave you for today.

Have a great Wednesday!

Collin Comes to Town :: Part 2 – Pike Place Market & Seattle Waterfront

by Stephanie

When we last left off, Collin and I had hit up The 5 Point Cafe.

We walked off our full bellies and hit up Pike Place Market!

What a beautiful day for sightseeing in Seattle.

In fact, all weekend we had luck with the weather.

Both Collin and I snapped a million pictures. It was all so beautiful!

Next stop, the Seattle Waterfront!

The new Ferris Wheel had just opened and it was absolutely beautiful!

Unfortunately, the line was ridiculously long, so Collin and I decided to pass on a ride in favor of leisurely walking up and down the boardwalk.

We concluded our Waterfront explorations with a trip to Ye Olde Curiosity Shop – my favorite as a child.

Such a wonderful day!

Our next installment will finish up our Seattle trip, and bring us to the other side of the state for wine tasting and more fun in the sun.

Later Dudes!

Race Recap :: Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon

by Stephanie

Oh boy, oh boy. I’m finally getting around to my Race Recap! Woohoo!

The weekend started with a very wet drive over the mountains to Seattle. It rained pretty much all day Friday which kept us cooped up in the car instead of out roaming the streets of Seattle. We decided the first thing we would do is hit up the expo at Century Link Field to get my bib number and swag bag.

The check-in process went very smooth.  I didn’t even have to wait in line.

After check-in, I was ready to load up on free samples.  I love free stuff.  And new-to-me free stuff is even better!

It was definitely an impressive Expo.  TONS of vendors and goodies.

As we entered, Scott Jurek was signing copies of his book Eat and Run.

Then we picked up our pre-ordered tickets for the monorail.  The fam and I decided to do the whole mass transit thing instead of driving in and trying to find a parking spot on race day.  It worked out perfectly.  In fact, I think it’s the only way I want to get to a race from now on.  Completely stress free.

The goodies.

  1. Jamba Juice :: I enjoyed a free strawberry Jamba Juice post-race too!
  2. Manuka Newton Snack Bars :: Oh, man. These were SO good. Manuka honey is where it’s AT.
  3. I entered to win a Nike Sports Watch :: Still waiting to hear that I’m a winner.
  4. Think Thin Bars :: Mom really likes the Crunch Carmel Chocolate Dipped Mixed Nuts Bar.
  5. So Delicious :: I didn’t try, but the parents liked the Mini Coconut Ice Cream Bars.
  6. DetermiNation :: An American Cancer Society program for athletes that wish to dedicate their training and endurance race participation to ending Cancer and to honor fallen soldiers.  This was really touching.
  7. LaraBar :: I got one of each flavor – plus their newest über Bars, which I like, but I am a traditionalist and like the original best.
  8. Shoe Harvest :: Donate your old shoes for a good cause.
  9. Food Should Taste Good :: Picked up a bag of Blue Corn and Sweet Potato.  LOVE.
  10. O.N.E. Coconut Water :: I love that they had this.  I am a big fan of coconut water for my pre- and post-race hydration.
  11. Cascadian Farm Granola :: I usually avoid granola, but this was really good.
  12. Shoe Charms :: How cute!  Although, I’d be worried I’d lose them.

I got a TON of swag.  I didn’t eat anything at the expo just so I could make sure to keep things as routine as possible.  In fact, I packed all my own food from home for Friday and Saturday morning.  Here’s what I’ve came back to the hotel with:

  1. Sweaty Bands :: I have a tradition that I purchase at least one headband at every race I run {that has an expo}.  I am obsessed with Sweaty Bands – they are backed with velvet so you never have to worry about losing them or having your headband slide around while running.
  2. Race T :: A very nice tech tee.
  3. GU Octane :: I don’t use gels ever – Anyone wanna try?
  4. Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Products :: I am looking forward to using these.  Apparently, they tingle everywhere!
  5. Smartfood Selects Hummus Popped Chips :: Holy smokes, were these good.  It’s on the grocery store list.
  6. More granola :: The benefit of having a posse with you at the expo is you come home with EXTRA swag.
  7. Downey Unstopables :: I’m a little nervous about trying this out, as I have a super sensitive nose and sometimes certain scents give me headaches.  What you are supposed to do is throw these babies in the wash and it boosts the fresh scent.

I was in bed by 7:00 that night, but definitely did not get to sleep by then.  We were right across the hall from the party room.  Plus, my mom and her TV.  Plus, my dad and his snoring.  Needless to say, it made for a rough night.  I didn’t drift off until 11:00ish or so, with a wake-up call at 3:45 am.  Not. enough. sleep.

We left the hotel at 4:45 am to make our way to Seattle’s new Light Rail.  The ride into downtown took us about 40 minutes, and then we caught the Monorail from Westlake into Seattle Center.

We had about 45 minutes to kill before the race start, which was just enough time to people watch {loved the rock ‘n’ roll costumes}, go to the bathroom, warm-up, go to the bathroom again {my nervous habit}, and get lined up.

I was in corral 2, just behind the elite athletes, so we didn’t have to wait for a second gun/wave.

I started off super strong.  The first 4 miles or so were flat and fast.

I was zooming a long, until the first hill.  A super steep up-hill followed by crazy sharp decline.

Then more rolling hills.  Around mile 8 I lost major steam.  I.was.dying.  So I grabbed a Gatorade {something I never do} and tried to get things back on track.  I think my fatigue can be attributed to lack of sleep, lack of a big enough breakfast, and the fact that I ran the Winthrop Half Marathon 12 days prior.

Slowly the Gatorade worked itself in to my system and I was able to pick up the pace again and finish the race strong.

Results
Time :: 1:33:14
Pace :: 7:07 min/mile
Division :: 8th out of 1,510 runners
Gender :: 28th out of 9,470 runners
Overall :: 166th out of 14,089 runners

Not too shabby, but as you can see, I am happy be to done. {side note: hello overexposed}

I then proceeded to guzzle a bottle of water, a strawberry Jamba Juice, and a coconut water + picking up more goodies.  Hey, you never know when hunger may attack!

A leisurely walk back to the Light Rail station was the perfect cool down.

Checking out the sites along the route…

Most definitely a fun weekend in Seattle and a great race!  Plus, an added bonus that the rain held out for us crazy runners!

Now I am looking forward to a summer of running for fun – no training schedule, no pace to beat, no self-imposed stress – just fun!  And maybe a little speedwork. ;) Sub 1:30 baby. It’s going to happen.

Peace, Love, & Rock ‘n’ Roll!
