Race Recap :: Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon

by Stephanie

Oh boy, oh boy. I’m finally getting around to my Race Recap! Woohoo!

The weekend started with a very wet drive over the mountains to Seattle. It rained pretty much all day Friday which kept us cooped up in the car instead of out roaming the streets of Seattle. We decided the first thing we would do is hit up the expo at Century Link Field to get my bib number and swag bag.

The check-in process went very smooth.  I didn’t even have to wait in line.

After check-in, I was ready to load up on free samples.  I love free stuff.  And new-to-me free stuff is even better!

It was definitely an impressive Expo.  TONS of vendors and goodies.

As we entered, Scott Jurek was signing copies of his book Eat and Run.

Then we picked up our pre-ordered tickets for the monorail.  The fam and I decided to do the whole mass transit thing instead of driving in and trying to find a parking spot on race day.  It worked out perfectly.  In fact, I think it’s the only way I want to get to a race from now on.  Completely stress free.

The goodies.

  1. Jamba Juice :: I enjoyed a free strawberry Jamba Juice post-race too!
  2. Manuka Newton Snack Bars :: Oh, man. These were SO good. Manuka honey is where it’s AT.
  3. I entered to win a Nike Sports Watch :: Still waiting to hear that I’m a winner.
  4. Think Thin Bars :: Mom really likes the Crunch Carmel Chocolate Dipped Mixed Nuts Bar.
  5. So Delicious :: I didn’t try, but the parents liked the Mini Coconut Ice Cream Bars.
  6. DetermiNation :: An American Cancer Society program for athletes that wish to dedicate their training and endurance race participation to ending Cancer and to honor fallen soldiers.  This was really touching.
  7. LaraBar :: I got one of each flavor – plus their newest über Bars, which I like, but I am a traditionalist and like the original best.
  8. Shoe Harvest :: Donate your old shoes for a good cause.
  9. Food Should Taste Good :: Picked up a bag of Blue Corn and Sweet Potato.  LOVE.
  10. O.N.E. Coconut Water :: I love that they had this.  I am a big fan of coconut water for my pre- and post-race hydration.
  11. Cascadian Farm Granola :: I usually avoid granola, but this was really good.
  12. Shoe Charms :: How cute!  Although, I’d be worried I’d lose them.

I got a TON of swag.  I didn’t eat anything at the expo just so I could make sure to keep things as routine as possible.  In fact, I packed all my own food from home for Friday and Saturday morning.  Here’s what I’ve came back to the hotel with:

  1. Sweaty Bands :: I have a tradition that I purchase at least one headband at every race I run {that has an expo}.  I am obsessed with Sweaty Bands – they are backed with velvet so you never have to worry about losing them or having your headband slide around while running.
  2. Race T :: A very nice tech tee.
  3. GU Octane :: I don’t use gels ever – Anyone wanna try?
  4. Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Products :: I am looking forward to using these.  Apparently, they tingle everywhere!
  5. Smartfood Selects Hummus Popped Chips :: Holy smokes, were these good.  It’s on the grocery store list.
  6. More granola :: The benefit of having a posse with you at the expo is you come home with EXTRA swag.
  7. Downey Unstopables :: I’m a little nervous about trying this out, as I have a super sensitive nose and sometimes certain scents give me headaches.  What you are supposed to do is throw these babies in the wash and it boosts the fresh scent.

I was in bed by 7:00 that night, but definitely did not get to sleep by then.  We were right across the hall from the party room.  Plus, my mom and her TV.  Plus, my dad and his snoring.  Needless to say, it made for a rough night.  I didn’t drift off until 11:00ish or so, with a wake-up call at 3:45 am.  Not. enough. sleep.

We left the hotel at 4:45 am to make our way to Seattle’s new Light Rail.  The ride into downtown took us about 40 minutes, and then we caught the Monorail from Westlake into Seattle Center.

We had about 45 minutes to kill before the race start, which was just enough time to people watch {loved the rock ‘n’ roll costumes}, go to the bathroom, warm-up, go to the bathroom again {my nervous habit}, and get lined up.

I was in corral 2, just behind the elite athletes, so we didn’t have to wait for a second gun/wave.

I started off super strong.  The first 4 miles or so were flat and fast.

I was zooming a long, until the first hill.  A super steep up-hill followed by crazy sharp decline.

Then more rolling hills.  Around mile 8 I lost major steam.  I.was.dying.  So I grabbed a Gatorade {something I never do} and tried to get things back on track.  I think my fatigue can be attributed to lack of sleep, lack of a big enough breakfast, and the fact that I ran the Winthrop Half Marathon 12 days prior.

Slowly the Gatorade worked itself in to my system and I was able to pick up the pace again and finish the race strong.

Results
Time :: 1:33:14
Pace :: 7:07 min/mile
Division :: 8th out of 1,510 runners
Gender :: 28th out of 9,470 runners
Overall :: 166th out of 14,089 runners

Not too shabby, but as you can see, I am happy be to done. {side note: hello overexposed}

I then proceeded to guzzle a bottle of water, a strawberry Jamba Juice, and a coconut water + picking up more goodies.  Hey, you never know when hunger may attack!

A leisurely walk back to the Light Rail station was the perfect cool down.

Checking out the sites along the route…

Most definitely a fun weekend in Seattle and a great race!  Plus, an added bonus that the rain held out for us crazy runners!

Now I am looking forward to a summer of running for fun – no training schedule, no pace to beat, no self-imposed stress – just fun!  And maybe a little speedwork. ;) Sub 1:30 baby. It’s going to happen.

Peace, Love, & Rock ‘n’ Roll!

My FIRST 1st! Race Recap :: Winthrop Half Marathon

by Stephanie

This Sunday, I ran a race!  As you may remember, I kind of forgot about this one.  It just snuck up on me after graduation, traveling, and settling in back home, and I didn’t really get in the amount of training that I would have liked.  Irregardless, I still ran the shizz out of the damn thing.

The morning started with a leisurely 5:00 am wake up call.  I downed my 2 cups of coffee, and packed 2 Vita Cocoa coconut waters, 2 bananas, 2 gluten-free homemade-jam sandwiches, and 1 peanut butter cookie Lara Bar.   I like to come prepared.  Dad and I hit the road to Winthrop at around 6:00 am.

The drive was quite enjoyable, and the scenery was beautiful.

During the ride up, I ate one banana and had one coconut water.

The view of the farmlands, orchards, and winding rivers was so relaxing to me – no pre-race jitters.

Coming in to Winthrop {and Twisp, the town before}, is like stepping back in time to the Old West.

No neon signs.  No blatant advertisements.

A small quiet town.

Perfect for a relaxing get-a-way.

Just adorable.

By 8:00 am, Dad and I had arrived at “The Barn” where I picked up my bib number.  No t-shirt or swag bag at this race, but I’m okay with that.  Most of the stuff that comes in goodie bags I never use, and I have about 10 zillion race t’s that I wear maybe once.

As you may remember, this was a downhill race, so a bus had to take us up the mountain a ways.  It wasn’t scheduled to leave until 9:00am, so Dad and I scoped out the race course, and where he could spot me as I raced by.

At 9:00 am, I was on the bus with the other 73 half marathoners {small race}.

It’s always interesting listening to other racers comments and conversations. –uh, yes, I was eavesdropping, but it was kind of hard not to, as these people were basically shouting their “interesting” running facts, PRs, training techniques, etc.  I overheard one girl say that she was shooting for a sub-1:30 race – ding! ding! ding! – I had someone to keep pace with.  I usually just keep to myself before races – it’s not till afterwards when I get real chatty.

When the bus made it to the top, we saw the first two marathoners zoom by. 6:01 and 6:07 average pace for the first two. Dang, dude.  We cheered on the 89 other marathoners as we waited for our 10:00 start.

Finally, after what seemed like a morning of hurry-up-and-wait, we lined up at the start line.

On your marks…

Get set…

GO!

We were off at a leisurely pace.

I quickly made my way to the front of the pack following closely behind ‘sub-1:30 girl’ and another guy.  I felt like we were going a little slow at the beginning considering we needed to keep a 6:48 average mile pace to ensure a sub-1:30 overall time, but since we were running mostly downhill at the beginning, it was difficult to say [I also don't have a Garmin]. Plus, I was concerned about blowing out my quads in the first few miles of the race due to lack of training, so I just stayed with the little group.

Around mile 3, I saw Dad!

Our ‘sub-1:30′ girl is the one in the light blue and hat.

As you can see, this is just about the point when I decided to pass her.

Woo-hoo! I get excited when I see people while racing.

Yep. Still waving. Dorkus.

From that point on, I was on my own.  No more spectators on the race course for me.

The rest of my run was, for the most part, really enjoyable.  There were a few tough hills, and the temperatures were higher and drier than what I was used to running in.  I got water at every station, which is completely unlike me.  [At the Flower City Half, I didn't stop at a single aid station.]

I kept fairly close to the lead guy, but then around mile 6 or 7, another dude came zooming by me out of what seemed like no where.  The two boys stayed neck and neck for the rest of the race, with me trailing behind.

I passed a good amount of marathoners on the race course, which in a twisted way helped boost my confidence – even though they had run over twice what I had already done.

The worst part of the race was the 3.5 mile out-and-back at the very end right before heading in to town.  On the way out there was an incredibly steep hill, which I knew would be waiting for me to trudge up right around mile 13.  Of course.  Also, the wind coming back was awful.  It was like running while pushing against a wall.

Obviously, I survived.

Yes, that would be my name :: Stephanie Wilson, 3rd Overall.

But what’s even better…

Stephanie Wilson, 1 Top Female!

Overall Time: 1:33:21

Average Pace: 7:08 per mile

My First 1st Place!

WOOHOOO!

Yeahhhh boyyyy!

Proud Dadio.

I let him hold my medal, just so he could bask in all it’s glory.  Then I snatched it back, grabbed some awesome watermelon and ordered my free Mexican meal!

Heck yes, muchachos!

Gluten-free, vegetarian goodness!

Dad enjoying my free beer along with his chimichangas.  I am so generous. ;)

Next up! Free ice cream!

I gobbled down my homemade huckleberry ice cream so fast that no on had a shot in hell in getting a picture of it.  You will just have to trust me that it was amazing.

Then I took a nap.

No, just kidding.  I am just really awesome at taking pictures.  No snoozing.  I was too excited!

What a fun, enjoyable race.  No PR, not sub-1:30, BUT no GI issues, which is a HUGE win for Team Gluten Free.

A huge shout-out to James Varner [race director] and Rainshadow Running for a great day in Winthrop!

Number 1, baby! Woohoo!

I’m Up, I’m Up

by Stephanie

Oh man.

6:00 am came way too early this morning.

I blame it on Mad Men.

I had some major catching up to do after a graduation, travel, and settling in at home.

BUT true to my word, I was up and out of bed by 6:15!

gumble, grumble…

I better be thanking myself later or someone’s gonna get it!

I’m sure you’re scared.

_____

So this Sunday is my next half marathon of the season.

Source

I realized that I had a race schedule about two days ago.

Yeah, kind of snuck up on me there…

My goal is still to run a sub-1:30 half, but due to my lack of distance for the past three weeks, I’m not gonna beat myself up if I don’t.

It is, thankfully, a nice downhill race.

These are last year’s results for Overall Female for the Half.

I don’t know if this means I have an excellent chance of placing first, or that this course is hard as hell…

We shall see!

Alright, time to get out there and conquer my morning run.

I’m going to have to bundle up – 45 degrees!

It’s June for goddsakes!

Sigh…

Have a pleasant day, chaps!

Decided I’d Race This Morning

by Stephanie

Well, well, well. Hello there.

I am up BRIGHT and early to race in this morning’s Flower City Half Marathon!

I promise I wasn’t trying to keep this race a big secret; I decided on running it yesterday.

Nothing like waiting until the last minute… ha!

I’ve always wanted to run this race since I’ve lived in Rochester, but it always seems like I’ve had work, or haven’t been quite ready for the distance, or some other excuse…  But no excuses this year! {Plus, it’s the last time I’m going to be around before heading back to the West Coast.} So I’m going for it!

I’m calling it my half-way-through-training-for-my-other-half-marathons check-up, as I am in week 6 of 12 before the Winthrop Half.

I’m not exactly sure what to expect, but I feel fairly confident in my fitness level.

I have made huge strides (no pun intended) since I got back on the metaphorical horse back in March.  Going from a 7:30ish pace to yesterday’s 5 miler at an average of 6:36 min/mile.  Yeah, dawg!

I did 11.5 miles last Sunday at a 7:02 pace, but I’m thinking I can push it a bit.

I would love a sub 1:30… but I have to remember: This is just a check-up!

If you are around/awake this morning you should come down and cheer us all on!

Yeah! Amp it up! Woooo!

I’ll be in the one in the most obnoxious neon green headband/ear warmers you have ever seen!

Happy Racing Sunday!

Winthrop Half Marathon and DI Matching

by Stephanie

Annnnd it’s Monday again!

This weekend crept by, and I am actually really looking forward to going back school and work.  Yeah. I’m a weirdo.

So today is kind of a special day:  My Dietetic Internship match order is due.

I am so ready for this madness to end.  I seriously feel like a crazy person when I think about it.  I just want to know where I am going in 9 short weeks.

Ugh gawd. Anxiety.

I am really trying to enjoy the rest of my time here in Rochester, but this whole living-on-a-deadline thing has got me acting like a freak.  Could it be that I am actually scared & sad to leave?  I am pushing and pulling everyone around me in strange directions in order to make the move easier, when I’m pretty sure no matter what I do, it’s going to suck.  It’s time to pull it together, because there is no reason for it to suck for 9 weeks and then move.

How about everyone just follow me back to the West Coast?! Solved it!

You know it!

_____

In other {less depressing} news, I signed up for the Winthrop Half Marathon!

I may be sore as hell (hello downhill race) for Seattle RnR, but I’m gonna take my chances!

I mean, seriously, who doesn’t want to run a race here:

It’s okay to be a teensy bit jealous…

Yeah, check out that elevation… I’m going to be flyingggg!

Run with me!!

______

Alright!  Off to School #8 to talk to kiddos about sugary drinks!  Re-Think Your Drink, yo!

Have a great week!
